The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has announced plans to build an online-based metaverse campus called Metaxt. The institution takes the first step towards this goal by building a mixed virtual reality classroom that allows students from other latitudes to participate in classes as if they were in the same space. The virtual classroom hosts the launch of the new Guangzhou campus.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology bets on the Metaverse
Institutions are finding more features and applications in the metaverse space and are slowly integrating these technologies into their daily processes. The University of Hong Kong has announced plans to create a joint metaverse that will integrate both locations on its campus like he is one. The application, called Methkust, will allow the institution’s students from different latitudes to participate in classes and events as if they were in the same venue.
The first event to test this metaverse-based system will be the opening of the Guangzhou campus, which the university will host next September. Pan Hui, Professor of Computational Media and Arts at the Guangzhou Campus, said:
Many of our guests are overseas and may not be able to attend, so we host them in the Metaverse.
Advantages of the virtual approach
Institutions described the benefits that metaverse-based classrooms and campuses can offer compared to traditional remote classroom settings using video conferencing tools such as Zoom. Hui said the Metaverse environment offers more interaction for students, making them feel as if they are participating in a real-world class. he explained:
With Zoom, it feels like you’re just looking at a 2D screen. But through virtual reality, you can feel as if you were there. I think communication is very important for learning. Learning outcomes are enhanced by how you interact with the students around you.
Hu added that the new focus will foster a sense of “unity and participation” that cannot otherwise be achieved due to geographical constraints. To achieve this unified virtual campus, the university will install an array of sensors and cameras to feed information into the Metaverse system.
Recently, the University of Tokyo also announced the integration of Metaverse technology into the learning process. The institution reportedly will begin offering introductory engineering lessons in the metaverse later this year.
