KAID Health Technology Demonstrates the Value of Natural Language Processing to Improve Preoperative Care

boston–(business wire)–KAID Health, AI-powered healthcare data analytics and provider engagement platform, has published findings validating the potential utility of natural language processing (NLP) technology to improve provider efficiency and quality of care. In the peer-reviewed “Doctors vs. Artificial Intelligence” paper, KAID Health’s NLP technology largely matched clinician reviewers in completing the preoperative checklist, and furthermore, his 16.6 I found that I was able to identify instances of %. The condition was not discovered by an anesthesiologist. This research study was conducted at UCSD’s Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Perioperative Informatics. The authors of the manuscript were Harrison S. Suh, BS, Jeffrey L. Tully, MD, Minhthy N. Meineke, MD, Ruth S. Waterman, MD, MS, and Rodney A. Gabriel, MD, MAS.

“We have demonstrated that NLP technology can help identify critical medical conditions associated with pre-anesthetic evaluation. It was a feature in KAID Health that used the input to flag critical medical conditions for anesthesiologists,” explains researcher and senior author Rodney Gabriel, PhD. “This study indicates that NLP may be a useful tool to assist preoperative anesthesia providers in screening and evaluating surgical patients.”

For each of the 93 patients who participated in the study, researchers collected all relevant free-text notes from the EMR. Free-text notes were processed by a named entity recognition pipeline incorporating an NLP machine learning model developed by KAID Health. This model recognizes and labels spans of text that correspond to medical concepts. Medical concepts were then mapped to a list of medical conditions of interest for preanesthetic evaluation. The most common conditions captured by the NLP pipeline by anesthesiologists included arrhythmia, angina pectoris, anticoagulation, peripheral vascular disease, obstructive sleep apnea, and neuromuscular disease.

KAID Health CEO Kevin Agatstein said: “KAID Health’s NLP technology played a key role in this study of identifying relevant pre-anesthetic histories to optimize anesthesiologist efficiency. It has shown the potential to reduce the workload of doctors, improve profitability and, most importantly, make surgeries safer.”
