Both contestants and horses came in a variety of sizes, but they had one thing in common at the Youth Rodeo at the Dawes County Fair on Monday night, August 1st. Stop action.
Some cowboys and cowgirls competed for the first time when they were only six years old. All of their rides were probably older and more experienced than they were. Luckily, there were no accidents or runaways.
On the other end of the spectrum were teenagers who were more daring and put things into high gear as fast as a horse could run. As with all sporting events, some events were more successful than others.
Leading the list was Alliance’s 9-year-old Burr Underwood. He took his first place in nearly every junior event, winning barrel races, pole his bending, flag races and breakaway his roping while claiming his cowboy honors in the Junior All Around. The only thing he didn’t win was a goat tail snatch, which put him in his third place.

It wasn’t Barr’s first rodeo either.In the last 10 days, he’s been an all-around cowboy in the Alliance and Lusk divisions as well. He used to ride He brought four of his horses to the Chadron Rodeo and used each horse at one of the events.
The junior all-around cowgirl was Kaia Hunter. She placed 2nd in both the Flag Race and Goat Tail Snatch and finished 3rd in the Barrel.
The senior all-around cowgirl was Nevaeh Wild, who won both the barrel race and the pole bending. She used the same black mare named Flicka for both events. The senior all-around cowboy was Jack Phillips, the winner of the flag race and second-place team he was also a member of his roping entry.
Intermediate All-Around was followed by Hadley Shrewsbury, who had been the winner of the flag race in that division to claim Cowgirl honours, after placing second in Pole Bending and third in both Barrel and Barrel. It was Hudson Ebmeyer who emerged as the top cowboy. Goat knot.
