Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett hires assistant to help manage game

Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett is trying to right the wrongs of the last two games by hiring veteran assistant coach Jerry Rosberg to help manage the game, Mike Chris of 9News reported.

Rosberg, 66, retired from coaching before the 2019 season after 11 seasons as the Baltimore Ravens’ assistant head coach and special teams coordinator. He also coached special teams with the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons before joining the Ravens in 2008. According to Chris, Rosberg spent the last week with the Broncos before the team completed hiring on Saturday. He will assist Hackett in the Broncos’ Week 3 game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night. .

After just two games at the helm of the Broncos following the team’s lukewarm 1-1 start, Hackett’s decision-making came under fire.

First, Hackett made the questionable decision to attempt a 64-yard field goal instead of going for a goal on 4th down in Week 1. The Broncos missed a kick and lost to the Seattle Seahawks. Later, after Broncos fans booed Hackett during the team’s ugly victory over the Texans in Week 3, Hackett said he needed to do a better job “making decisions faster.”

Hiring Rosburg appears to be an attempt to right Hackett’s early mistakes. Rosberg worked hand in hand with the Ravens’ head coach John Harbaugh during his tenure at Baltimore, including his 2012 Super Bowl win.

According to Kalyn Kahler of The Athletic, Hackett’s problems aren’t all that uncommon as the first head coach to also demand offensive play. A source recently told Koehler that coaches with similar backgrounds to Hackett generally have poor game management.

“…There are a lot of players who could be playing full-time and who could be investing a lot in situational football because they don’t focus as much on game planning,” said one. A game management coach told Koehler. Areas where head coaches control football when they can have a lot of agency over the team’s results and the head coach is not an OC.

Other first-time offensive head coaches, like Brian Dabor of the New York Giants, have given up their play-calling duties this year for the very idea. Nike Siriani, head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles did something similar midway through the first year of 2021 after calling the play early in the season.

“I felt that to be a better head coach, I needed to make a change in terms of how I could free myself. I had a great assistant to direct the play, so I hired him,” Siriani said. said in June. “… what I noticed was, well, there wasn’t enough communication.” [defensive coordinator Jonathan] Didn’t tell enough about Ganon about something, or defense about something they need to pump up, or [special teams coordinator Michael Clay] Or special teams. ”

Hackett may not have given up play-calling just yet, but hiring Rosberg should help things out, at least in the interim.
