No. 5 Clemson grabbed a 51-45 overtime win at No. 21 Wake Forest.
DJ Uiagalelei found Davis Allen on a leaping grab to start the second overtime, and the Clemson defense prevented the Sam Hartman and Wake Forest offenses from scoring a first down on possession by Demon Deacons. It’s his 14th straight win against the Demon Deacons during coach Dabo Swinney’s tenure with the Tigers.
Wake Forest won the ACC Atlantic Division one season ago despite losing to Clemson. That division title snapped his five-year division winning streak for the Tigers, dating back to 2014.

Clemson QB DJ Wiagalerei had arguably the best game since his spot start against Notre Dame in November 2020. He continued to play with his feet in the passing game and, most importantly, consistently delivered accurate throws into tight windows for Clemson receivers.
Clemson lost three games in 2021 as their offense struggled. It was primarily a product of Uiagarelei play. He threw for just his 2,246 yards and made more interceptions than his touchdowns on passes. Whoops, his five TDs he threw on Saturday were more than half of his 2021 total (nine).
Wiagalerei had high hopes when he stepped in to replace Trevor Lawrence against Notre Dame in 2020. The Tigers lost that game in his double overtime, but Wiagalerai said he threw for over 400 yards and threw for 342 yards and scored three touchdowns before scoring three totals in the week. scored a touchdown. With Lawrence’s move to the NFL, Wiagalerei entered the 2021 season as the undisputed starter. He failed to crack a 250-yard pass in any of his 13 games for Clemson, and he had only four games where the completion percentage was above his 60%.
The Wake Forest Show 2021 Was No Fluke
Hartman matched Wiagalerai for 337 yards and 6 touchdowns. Demon his Deacons burned out Clemson’s secondary throughout his day, also benefiting from pass interference penalties. Many of Clemson’s 10 penalties for his 120 yards were defensive his pass interference calls when Clemson defenders pushed and dragged Wake his Forrest receivers on single coverage.
But Wake Forest couldn’t get past Clemson in the second half. The Devil Butler went first in the third quarter for the first time. However, Wake never led by more than eight points at any point in the second half.
After Clemson tied the game at 35–35 with 11:16 remaining, the teams traded field goals, and Wake Forest punted to the Tigers with just seconds remaining.
It’s easy to see that the Demon Deacons could be the second best team in the ACC after Saturday’s game. He’s the only ranked team left on the remaining schedule, giving him a chance to show that he deserves consideration for the New Year’s Six. And it’s a shame that the ACC division still exists. If the conference plan to do away with the division starts in 2022 instead of 2023, it’s very likely we’ll see a rematch of this fun game in the ACC title game, instead of Clemson’s or Wake’s his Only one is placed in Charlotte.
