KNIGHTS SHOP FORMER ORIGIN STARS TO RIVALS

Newcastle veterans Tyson Frizell and David Klemmer have reportedly been shopped around in a bid to reinvigorate Newcastle’s struggling roster.

WWOS’ The Mole reported the Knights are willing to offload their two biggest earning forwards in Klemmer and Frizell to free up salary cap space to chase Luke Brooks.

Klemmer has been linked to a move away from the Knights for some time after reportedly falling out with coach Adam O’Brien.

But news Frizell, who was brought to the club on a three-year deal in 2020 could be moved on is a bombshell move given what the Knights paid to get him to the Hunter.

The Knights see moving on Klemmer and Frizell, who are on bloated contracts as the ideal way to inject some spark into their squad.

Luke Brooks is the number one target on their shopping list and the Knights could use the money saved from Klemmer and Frizell to lure the Tigers halfback to the Hunter.

Brooks is on a reported $1.3 million in the final year of his back-ended Tigers contract.

The Tigers are keen on Klemmer, but have rejected a swap deal with Brooks at this stage.

Brooks is looking likely to join the Knights in 2024, but Newcastle are desperate to lure him to the club early pending a release from the Tigers.

At 31, Frizell has scored 31 tries in 217 games for the Sharks, Dragons and Knights, while he has also played 14 Origins for the Blues and 19 Tests for Australia and Wales combined.

The sticking point is Frizell only took up an option in his favor to remain at the Knights in 2023 earlier this year and his asking price could be too great for rival clubs given his age.

SUPER LEAGUE CLUB TARGET ROOSTERS FIREBRAND

The Catalans Dragons have reportedly made a play to lure Roosters and New Zealand forward Jared Waerea-Hargreaves to the Super League.

The Daily Telegraph reported Catalans have internally discussed approaching Waerea-Hargreaves about seeking an immediate release from the Roosters to make the switch to the UK Super League.

The 33-year-old has a year to run on his Roosters deal, but has attracted interest from French team to finish his career in the South of France.

Waerea-Hargreaves turns 34 in January and could follow former Roosters teammate Mitchell Pearce to the Dragons.

It is unknown at this stage if the Roosters would be willing to release Waerea-Hargreaves, with front-rowers Siosiua Taukeiaho moving on and Matt Lodge unsigned at this stage.

Catalans recently told former Roosters prop Dylan Napa he was free to look for another club and his move would likely need to be sealed before the Dragons can sign Waerea-Hargreaves.

Waerea-Hargreaves has scored 16 tries in 280 games for the Roosters and Manly since his debut in 2009 and has won three premierships with the Tri-colours.

MANLY FLYER SHUNS KNIGHTS TO INK MONSTER EXTENSION

Sea Eagles winger and fullback Reuben Garrick has reportedly shunned an approach from the Knights to commit to Manly on a monster four-year extension

Michelle Bishop reported on SEN radio that Garrick is set to put pen to paper on a four-year extension that will tie him to the club until the end of the 2027 season.

“He’s certainly not off to Newcastle,” Bishop said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“He has agreed to terms with Manly (and) it is a four-year deal.

“He did have a year to go on his current contract but they’re giving him an upgrade for 2023.

“The club is certainly looking forward now.

“These are some signs of stability again on the back of Des Hasler’s ugly exit.

“Exciting for the club as it appears to be heading into the right direction.

“Great to see Reuben Garrick stay.”

Garrick reportedly does not want to play wing, with Manly offering him the center role as Tom Trbojevic is their preferred fullback.

The 25-year-old has scored 55 tries and 788 points in 91 games for Manly since his debut in 2019 and was named the 2021 Dally M winger of the year.
