The Texas Rangers needed to turn things around, but were unable to pull off a much-needed win against Minnesota after losing 2–1 to the Twins at Target Field on Friday night.
The Rangers (53-66) spent their final four games at home against Oakland, rebuilding their organization. The Rangers fired team president Jon Daniels and put general manager Chris Young in charge of all baseball operations Wednesday. The move by the team’s primary owner Ray Davis comes two days after Daniels and Young fired manager Chris Woodward and promoted third base coach Tony Beasley to interim manager.
Davis told reporters Wednesday that Young will continue to travel with the team and keep them informed of what the changes mean for the team and organization.
The Rangers have lost another one-run game and are now 7-25 with such results this season.
Meanwhile, the Twins and Rangers had low-scoring games, and Minnesota (62-55) accomplished what few teams have this season. Rangers left-hander Martín Perez (9-4).
At least two solo homers in the Twins’ first four at-bats were all that was needed on Friday.
Perez hit 10 home runs and 11 homers this season for his second straight win. First, Twins first baseman Luis Ares pulled a pitch into right field for a solo shot. gave the lead of
From there, Perez picked up form, completing six innings, giving up five hits, two runs (both earned), three walks, and seven strikeouts on 97 pitches. He has seven strikeouts for the second year in a row as a starting pitcher, and his third seven strikeouts this month. He made his ninth starting appearance in his August 3 game against Baltimore.
Twins starter Dylan Bundy (7-5) was impeccable in most of his outs, which ended in an out in the sixth inning.
The right-handed hitter navigated the Rangers’ lineup deftly, allowing two strikeouts on just two hits and one walk. Bubba Thompson’s second hit after running out a ground ball on the third base line led to Marcus Semien striking out on a 2-2 pitch. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli then ended Bundy’s night with just 71 pitches and brought in Caleb Thielver to face Rangers’ Corey Seager.
The reliever was able to strike out Seager, but it took nine pitches. On the final pitch, Thompson moved to his second place. Then Nathaniel Rowe’s RBI single scored Thompson and cut the Twins’ lead by one run.
From there, the Twins’ bullpen handled the Rangers, with Trevor Medill giving up one run in the sixth. This was the result of a Nathaniel Rowe RBI single that scored Bubba Thompson. The Twins pitched only four hits.
Texas made it interesting in the ninth inning with Jonah Haim and Leodi Taveras drawing one-out walks from closer Jorge Lopez. However, Brad Miller lined up in right field, and Twins right fielder Max Kepler threw Culberson, who did not tag in time, for a game-ending double play.
The Rangers will continue the series with Glenn Otto on Saturday, Kohei Arihara on Sunday and Cole Ragans on Monday. Saturday’s game will be broadcast on his 1080-AM band on his KRLD as his 105.3. Zafan will be in charge of his preseason game for the Cowboys.
