For 2022, especially for the NFL, it’s not hard to get information. With just one tweet, the word spreads rapidly around the world. We witnessed the hand in person Friday afternoon in relation to the Los Angeles Chargers and Justin Herbert.
Last Thursday night, Justin Herbert got an injection in his rib that left him in visible pain. On one play, he was injured and unable to contest for yards. On the next play, however, he unleashed a 35-yard rope-down field. It was really nice to see. The Chargers bettor was a particularly big fan, leading Los Angeles down his field and backdoor earning his cover.
Herbert was diagnosed with a rib cartilage fracture. He was a limited participant in Wednesday and Thursday practices. He appeared to be on track heading into this weekend’s game against Jacksonville. Los Angeles was his favorite at home with seven points on Friday morning against the Jaguars. But that changed Friday afternoon.
Tweets trigger market movements
Friday is the most important practice day in the entire NFL. Many players tend to have built-up bumps and bruises, which limits them to the beginning of the week.
When Los Angeles took to the field for practice on Friday, The Athletic’s Chargers manager Daniel Popper tweeted:
Within minutes of Popper’s tweet, the Chargers went from a 7-point favorite to a 3-point favorite. Clearly, Chase Daniel getting a first team rep in the final practice of the week doesn’t bode well when it comes to Herbert.
Spread moves further if Herbert is eliminated
A 4 point drop in spreads is newsworthy, but Justin Herbert is worth much more than 4 points. Earlier this season, we confirmed that Dak Prescott is worth about 10 points to the Cowboys’ spread. It looked like an overreaction by the betting market, but it happened. Herbert is better than Prescott.
Having moved the spread by 4 points, the betting market has realized the real possibility that Herbert will not play. We expect this spread to drop further if he is officially ruled out. With Chase Daniel in the heart of Los Angeles, it wouldn’t be surprising if Jacksonville now appears as a favorite on the road.
Not practicing on Fridays also sheds light on how much pain Herbert is coping with. Playing through this injury could have a bigger impact on his play than originally anticipated. However, if Herbert plays, I think this line will return to Los Angeles in favor. If Herbert seems to be playing through injury, he can join that bet and bet on Los Angeles in the current depleted numbers.
But three points for the Jaguars is worth it, even if Herbert is believed to have missed the game. If he is officially ruled out, he will likely be unable to score his goals in freefield. Of course, you can wait until closer to game time for more clarity. It will also be
The movement of this line indicates that it is indeed possible that Herbert will not play on Sunday. At least, the odds are much higher than many thought on Friday morning.
