Lisa Curry releases her daughter Jaimi's ashes at the top of Mount Kosciuszko

Lisa Curry has released a balloon filled with her daughter Jaimi’s ashes at the top of Mount Kosciuszko, two years after the 33-year-old’s tragic death.

The retired Olympic swimmer, 60, announced on Tuesday she’d scaled Australia’s tallest mountain over the weekend, sharing a gallery of photos documenting the treacherous expedition.

‘I needed something to help me find focus again and get out of bed, but my main purpose was to take my daughter’s ashes to the top of Mt Kosciuszko,’ she wrote on Instagram.

The trip, which had been postposed several times due to Covid restrictions, proved enormously challenging for the Commonwealth Games gold medalist.

‘I can honestly say it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. My beautiful friend Christine didn’t leave my side which I was very grateful for. The water is my comfort zone, not mountains,’ she explained.

‘The conditions were very challenging, plenty of snow, ice, rain, sleet, baby hail (sago), 60-100kmh winds, we had it all. Once we headed out, we were committed. No turning back. One step at a time.’

Lisa found the hike particularly difficult due to her atrial fibrillation, a condition where the heart beats irregularly, often causing poor blood flow.

‘There was one last hill to “walk” up. It was a complete struggle for me. I could see a blurry Glenn standing there waiting for me, every step I was getting closer but couldn’t see through my tears,’ she recalled.

Once at the mountain’s peak, Lisa released a small pink balloon containing Jaimi’s ashes and dried flowers from her funeral into the air.

Lisa also paid tribute to Jaimi by setting up a makeshift memorial at the mountain's peak, featuring a photo of the pair together, a gold plaque and two Kewpie dolls

‘An overwhelming sense of achievement and emotional anxiety with what I was about to do. The wind was extreme, and took the balloon quickly, but it landed on the snow not far away, so [my friend] Glenn went and picked it up and let it go again,’ she wrote.

‘I honor our Jaimi by taking her ashes and dried petals from her funeral to amazing places around the country and the world. This spot on top of Mt Kosciusko is the closest to heaven that I could get so it was very meaningful to me. Everyone has their own way of honoring those that are special to them,’ she continued.

Lisa completed her post with a touching tribute to her beloved Jaimi: ‘Fly free beautiful angel. Never forgotten.’
